WHOSE STANDARDS

"O course we would not dare classify ourselves
or compare ourselves with those who rate
themselves so highly.  How stupid they are!
They make up their own standards to measure
themselves by, and they judge themselves by
their own standards!"
(2 Corinthians 10:12 TEV)

THE ANVIL

"I paused last eve beside the blacksmith's door,
And heard the anvil ring, the vespers chime,
And looking in I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.

'How many anvils have you had?' said I,
'To wear and batter all these hammers so?'
'Just one,' he answered.  Then with twinkling eye:
'The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.'

And so, I thought, the anvil of God's word
For ages skeptics blows have beat upon,
But though the noise of falling blows was heard
The anvil is unchanged; the hammer gone.

SAVING MONEY

"Here is a terrible thing that I have seen in this world:
people save up their money for a time when they may need it,
and then lose it all in some bad deal and end up with nothing
left to pass on to their children.
We leave this world just as we entered it - with nothing.
In spite of all our work there is nothing we can take with us."
(Ecclesiastes 5:13 - 15 TEV)

"Be wise enough not to wear yourself out trying to get rich.
Your money can be gone in a flash, as if it had grown wings
and flown away like an eagle.
(Proverbs 23:4,5 TEV)

LEARNING TO GARDEN

Growing some of my own food makes sense to me.
I could save money.  It would be fresh.  I could save
money.  It would be a good use of excess yard.  I
could save money.  It would give me something
to do.  I could save money.  It would give me exercise.
I could save money.  And if things ever get
real bad, I'd have food.  And I could save
money.

But, I have a greasy thumb.  Not a green thumb.
And as you know, grease kills plants.  Consequently,
I  have spend a lot of time on the internet trying to learn
how to garden, or be a gardener.

I think I have finally memorized the routine for
growing anything.  It goes like this.

1.  Buy some dirt or potting soil.
2.  If you already have dirt.  Then buy
lumber to make a bed with.
Or buy some pots.
Or buy some boxes.
3. Buy some tools to work the garden with.
4. Buy compost.
5. Buy mulch.
6. Buy seeds or sets.
7. Buy a book on how to do it.
8. Buy a garden planner.
9. Buy a pH meter.  That is so
someone can sell you some pH.
10. Buy fertilizer.
11. Buy Lime.
12. Buy landscape fabric.
13. Buy Miracle-Gro.
14. Buy bug eradicator.
15. Buy weed control.
16. Buy a freezer to put it in.
17. Buy freezer bags to keep it separated.
18. Buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, buy.

Now, I am ready to save money on
a dozen home grown tomatoes.

But, I wonder how grandpa did it back in the great depression,
he did not have any money.  Or the pioneers, they could
not go to a store.  Nor did they know what pH was or how
to pronounce a fancy word like "sustainably" so people
would know they were smart.

In fact,
how did they grow anything before garden hoses
were invented??????

Now I am really confused.

HELP!

RELIGION

"The Lord said,
'These people claim to worship me,
but their words are meaningless,
and their hearts are somewhere else.
Their religion is nothing but human
rules and traditions which they have
simply memorized.
So I will startle them with one unexpected
blow after another.  Those who are wise
will turn out to be fools, and all their
cleverness will be useless.'"
(Isaiah 29:13,14 TEV)

THE RIVER

"He told me of a river bright
That flows from Him to me,
That I might be, for His delight,
A fair and fruitful tree."

BECOMING WISE

"The way to become wise is to honor the LORD;
he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands.
He is to be praised forever."

HELPFUL HINT

After working on a diesel tractor my coveralls
stunk, or is that stank?  Any way they smelled.
So, I run them and my cell phone through the
washer and dryer together.

The cell phone came out nice and clean.
But did not work.  The coveralls did not
come out very clean.  But worked.

When my wife saw the coveralls, she said
I did not use enough soap.  I had only put one
soap thing in the washing machine.  I should have
put two soap things in the washing machine.

HINT:

If you are going to wash your coveralls and cell phone,
either wash them separately, or us two soap things.

YOUR HEART'S DESIRE

"Seek your happiness in the LORD,
and he will give you your heart's desire.

Give yourself to the LORD;
trust in him and he will help you;
he will make your righteousness shine
like the noonday sun."
(Psalms 37:4,5 GNT)

PRAYER

"As for the 'prayer of faith' it is a simple thing.
It is talking to God as you would talk to your
own earthly father, with implicit trust in His love
for you and unfaltering confidence in His personal
concern for your welfare.  It is knowing in your
heart what you say with your lips."

TODAY'S PROMISE

"Dear friends, let us love one another,
because love comes from God.
Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God,
for God is love.  And God showed his love
for us by sending his only Son into the world,
so that we might have life through him.
This is what love is: it is not that we loved God,
but that he loved us and sent his Son to be
the means by which our sins are forgiven.

Dear Friends, if this is how God loved us,
then we should love one another.
No one has ever seen God,
but if we love one another, God lives
in union with us, and his love is made
perfect in us."
(1 John 4:7-12 TEV)

A SURE HOPE

"I said,
'I have worked,
but how hopeless it is!
I have used up my strength,
but have accomplished nothing.'
Yet I can trust the LORD
to defend my cause;
he will reward me for what I do."
(Isaiah 49:4 TEV)

WHAT REALLY COUNTS

All my life I have wanted to be an expert at something.
Almost anything.  But I never made it.

After a long life (A few months shy of four score years.)
I realized that no mortals are experts at anything.
Some are only better guessers than others.
The only true expert at anything is God himself.

I was not endowed with a lot of strength.
Just sufficient for my task.  The gym might
have been a help.  But that just looks like paying
out good money to work up a sweat, and does
not put any bread on the table.

Riches are fickle and fleeting.
If you watch the news over a period of time
you will notice that riches do not satisfy,
at least for very long.

So what does count????

God said,

"The wise should not boast of their wisdom,
nor the strong of their strength,
nor the rich of their wealth.
If any want to boast,
they should boast that they know and understand me,
because my love is constant,
and I do what is just and right.
These are the things that please me."
(Jeremiah 9:23,24 TEV)

Consequently,
with God's help I want to spend the remainder of
my days becoming better acquainted with God.
That is what really counts.

TODAY'S PROMISE

"I gave them the same glory you gave me,
so that they may be one,
just as you and I are one;
I in them and you in me,
so that they may be completely one,
in order that the world may know that
you sent me and that you love them
as you love me."

LED ASTRAY

"You felt sure of yourself in your evil;
you thought that no one could see you.
Your wisdom and knowledge led you astray,
and you said to yourself,
'I am God - there is no one else like me.;
