REAPING WHAT YOU SOW

You may recall from an earlier post that the Apostle
Paul wrote the Philippians Epistle around A.D. 61.
while in prison at Rome.

As you can imagine scholars do not agree on Pauls
age at death.  But it is estimated that he was about
60 to 68 years old when he died.

So we have Paul in prison at Rome as an old man
probably facing his execution when he writes;

"For to me, living means living for Christ,
and dying is even better.  But if I live, I can
do more fruitful work for Christ.  So I
really don't know which is better.  I'm torn
between two desires: I long to go and be
with Christ,  which would  be far better for
me.  But for your sakes, it is better that I
continue to live."
(Philippians 1:21 - 23 NLT)

Why would he "long to go and be with Christ,
which would be far better for me."?

Real simple.
Paul knows that we do not receive our rewards for
serving Christ until we die and leave this old world.
However,
he also knows that the longer he serves Christ here
on earth, the greater the reward.  You know, the
more service, the more reward.

Even Jesus Christ himself said;

"And if you give even a cup of cold water to
one of the least of my followers, you will surely
be rewarded."
(Matthew 10:42 NLT)

Two other references Paul makes about this thing
of serving Christ.  One from his Epistle to the
Churches of Galatia and the other from the Epistle
to the Church at Corinth.

"Don't be misled - you cannot mock the
justice of God.  You will always harvest what
you plant.  Those who live only to satisfy their
own sinful nature will harvest decay and death
from that sinful nature.  But those who live to
please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life
from the Spirit."
(Galatians 6:7,8 NLT)

And

"So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong
and immovable.  Always work enthusiastically
for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do
for the Lord is ever useless."
(1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT).

TODAY'S QUOTE

"It is distinctive of the Christian life, that while it
grows more conscientious, it also grows less and less
a task of duty and more and more a service of delight."

TRUE SUCCESS

I would bet that you are caught in the same trap
that I often am.  We are not satisfied with the results
of our service for God.  He has done so much for me
and I want to do more for him.

Consider this.

One time Jesus Christ sent out seventy "preachers".
Things went great for them.  They came back a happy
bunch.  We read:

"The seventy returned with joy saying, 'Lord, even
the demons are subject to us in Your name.'"
(Luke 10:12 NASB)

   Can you top that?
Of course you can not or have not.  If you had you
would have let the world know about it.

But how did Jesus respond?

"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits
are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are
recorded in heaven."
(Luke 10:20 NASB)

Do you catch that?
Christ is more concerned about our relationship
with him than our service for him.

I need to spend more time loving him and
less "slaving" for him.

WRECKED BY ATTITUDE

Several thousand years ago, even before your were born,
there was a king in Judea named Amaziah.  Now Amaziah
was unique in this respect:

"He did what was pleasing to the LORD,
but did it reluctantly."
(2 Chronicles 25:2 TEV)

His attitude in serving God was just like your attitude,
and my attitude, about speed limits.  If we observe them at
all, IT IS RELUCTANTLY.

That is the way Amaziah served God.  Just because he had to.
Not because he wanted to. And if you will read his life's story
you will see this got him into a lot of trouble and he was
eventually assassinated.  He was wrecked, totaled out.

In contrast, there later came another king with another
funny name, "Hezekiah".   Hezekiah reigned over the same
nation that Amaziah did, for the same length of time.
But his attitude was different.

"King Hezekiah did what was right and what was
pleasing to the LORD his God.  He was successful,
because everything he did for the Temple or in
observance of the Law, he did in a spirit of complete
loyalty and devotion to his God."
(2 Chronicles 31:20-21 TEV)

Hezekiah, "Succeeded in everything he did,..."
(Chapter 32:30)

Hezekiah had a reign of prosperity and success because
of his love for God.

Yes, just like you and me, Hezekiah messed up some,
but he had a life that was blessed by God because of
his devotion to God.

Is life going like you want?
Check your devotion to God.
