WHERE'S THE POWER?

Many, many, many years ago I would set with my Bible
in my lap reading about the "New Testament Church".
Not being as smart as you are, all I could tell was that
the Church in the Bible was different than the Church I
attended, or you attend.  For one thing they had more
power than we did.  There were other differences too,
but what were they?

Since then I have spent many years in several different
denominations.  Two of them in particular confidently
proclaimed that they "had the power".  But my question
constantly was, in all the years of attending, "Where's
the power" you are talking about?

After about forty or fifty years of watching and learning
(Mostly from others) it has become obvious that there
is absolutely no similarity between today's Church - most
places - and the Church of the New Testament.  We use
the same words, but over the years have attached different
meanings to the "Religious" words we use.

To add to the wonderment of it all, in this country we
have more Bibles, Christian literature, Christian books
and Christian programs than anywhere in the world.
But, about the weakest "Church".

We are like some people the Apostle Paul spoke of when
he said they ... "are always trying to learn but who can
never come to to know the truth."

Many years ago I ask some folks who were visiting our
Church how their pastor was doing - or something.  I
of course referred to the good pastor as "Reverend".
What a mistake that was.  They let me know real quick
that he was not a "Reverend" any more.  He is a
"Doctor" now.  Since then this good man has became
nationally famous.

It is obvious the way the Church is going that we
do not need more "Doctors" of divinity or philosophy
or anything else.
WE NEED PROPHETS
not "Doctors".

But to the point.
Way back before you or I were born Moses had the answer
to our dilemma.  He was speaking to the children of Israel
about the Law God had given them and keeping it.
Moses told them;

"You know it and can quote it,
so now obey it."
(Deuteronomy 30:14 GNT)

GOD IS NOT IMPRESSED WITH YOUR TITLE

GOD IS NOT IMPRESSED WITH YOUR TITLE,
and neither am I.
At least the way you would want me to be.

I recently received information about a ministry in the mail.
The best I know, it is a fine ministry doing a great
work for God.  In fact, I probably have donated money to help it.

But something stands out as so typical of our day.
The person in charge of this outreach is,
the
Rt. Rev. Dr. ..........  ..............
And not only that but,
the
President and General Director.

WOW!

How impressive!

But the words of Jesus keep eating at me.

"You must not be called 'Teacher,' because
you are all equal and have only one Teacher.
And you must not call anyone here on earth 'Father,'
because you have only the one Father in heaven.
Nor should you be called 'Leader,'
because your one and only leader is the Messiah.
The greatest one among you must be your servant.
Whoever makes himself great will be humbled,
and whoever humbles himself will be made great."
-Matthew 23:8-11 (GNB)

Eugene Peterson in "The Message"
Translates verses seven and eight this way.

"They love to sit at the head table at church dinners,
basking in the most prominent positions,
preening in the radiance of public flattery,
receiving honorary degrees and getting called,
'Doctor' and 'Reverend.' "

But how men love titles.
  • Reverend
  • Very Reverend
  • Right Reverend
  • Most Reverend
  • Father
  • Reverend Father
  • Your Eminence
  • Your Piety
  • Your Holiness
  • The Venerable
  • Your Grace
  • Doctor.
SICKING.

John Kingdon in Secret Missions on pp. 47,48
shares this insight after his visit with that Spiritual
giant in China, Wang Ming Tao.

"The highlight was actually realizing that when you go through
all these troubles, I thought you should become a spiritual
giant, but spiritual giants are, in essence, very humble."

"Its just the opposite of what many imagine a giant to be.
Sometimes Christians think a person like this would
be one who spouts off words of wisdom.  That is true
to an extent, but the main thing they put across is their
humility; their servant hood."

Want to impress me?

Then demonstrate the signs of those who believe
as in Mark 16:17,18.
Or,
the signs of an apostle as mentioned by the apostle Paul.
Or,
call down fire from heaven like Elijah.

A title just won't do it.
