ANOTHER DESPERATE PRAYER ANSWERED

My problem was with a motorcycle.  No, not the one above.
That one is a Honda made into a "cafe racer".  The one I got
into trouble with was an old Kawasaki from the same era as
the Honda above.

I had bought the Kawasaki in a non running condition from
a friend.  It was a shaft drive [Not chain like the one above.]
I wanted to make  it into a cross country motorcycle that I
would not have to spend all my time lubing the chain.

My trouble began with my pride.  Where my friend had not
been able to get it started, I wanted to be able to tell him I got
it started with no trouble.  The Scriptures tell us, "Pride goes
before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall."
and I was about to fall.

My mistake was trying to cheat using too much starting
fluid.  It back fired catching number one carb. on fire.
[That would be the carb. the closest in the photo above.]
So there I was with the carb. on fire and flames going
up around the gas tank that was half full of gas.

I could not see my fire extinguisher so I tried blowing
it out.  I have used that trick in the past, but this time
it only singed my eye brows.  Then I took an old rag
and started trying to beat out the flames while looking
for my fire extinguisher.

I finally spotted my fire extinguisher.   I pulled the pin
and squeezed the trigger.  NOTHING.  It had been in
the shop too long and lost it's charge.

Back to trying to beat the fire out, but it was not working.
By this time I was ready to push the motorcycle out
the door and let it burn up.

The problem there was my car was just outside the door
and if I pushed it further it would go down the hill
next to the house.   By now I was getting really, really
tired trying to beat the fire away from the tank.

In desperation I simply cried out,
"Jesus help me."

The fire went out in an instant.

LITTLE PEACOCKS?

More of Solomon's wisdom.

"Then I observed that most people are motivated
to success because they envy their neighbors.
But this, too, is meaningless - like chasing the
wind."
(Ecclesiastes 4:4 NLT)

And further Solomon says;

"I observed yet another example of something
meaningless under the sun.  This is the case
of a man who is all alone, without a child or a
brother, yet who works hard to gain as much
wealth as he can.  But then he asks himself,
'Who am I working for?  Why am I giving up
so much pleasure now?'  It is all so meaningless
and depressing."
(Ecclesiastes 4:7,8 NLT)

Just a thought here.  Don't you think that the base
cause of all this effort is that little word "Pride",
what we call the "original sin."  All that effort
simply to "show off" in this life here on earth.
But, in the eternal prospective is an effort in
futility.

The same author, Solomon, in another of his
writings said;

"Pride goes before destruction
and haughtiness before a fall."
(Proverbs 16:18 NLT)

PRIDE

"Pride goes before destruction.
And a haughty spirit before stumbling."
(Proverbs16:18 NASB)

I worked for a man one time that was a nice guy.
Working for him again would be just fine.  But, let's
just say that he had an excess of "self esteem".

I remember well when he bought the company waiting
for the new business cards to come out.  For some
reason my interest was in seeing the one for my
department head, or my boss - not the owner's card.

When the new cards came out it was overwhelming
the way the new owner's pride showed through on the
card to the exclusion of the department heads position
on the card.

Being acquainted with the truth above, I was stunned
recognizing in an instant that the days of that company
were limited.

The company lasted possibly five or six years.
Then this man's next venture did not succeed.
And the last time I talked to him he was back to
working for some else.

Pride does go before failure.

RECIPE FOR PEACE AND CONTENTMENT

Many years ago one of the greatest kings of all
time; and a man who was pleasing to God gave
us the path to peace and contentment.
he said,

"Lord, I have given up my pride and
turned away from my arrogance.

I am not concerned with great matters
or with subjects too difficult for me.

Instead, I am content and at peace.

As a child lies quietly in its mother's arms,
so my heart is quiet within me.

Israel, trust in the Lord now and forever!"
(Psalms 131 GNT)

FINALLY GETTING SMART

"LORD, I have given up my pride
and turned away from my arrogance.
I am not concerned with great matters
or with subjects too difficult for me.
Instead, I am content and at peace.
As a child lies quietly in its mother's arms
so my heart is quiet within me."
(Psalms 131:1-2 TEV)

WANTING THE HONOR

The company I worked for was bought by a new owner and we moved into different facilities. I do not know why, but I was anxious to see the new business cards.
No, I was not going to have any. My position did not require business cards, but most of my coworkers did.

The day the new cards came I grabbed one of my manager's cards. At first glance of the new card something went all over me. Like a chill, a premonition or a scare.

It was obvious. The pride of the new owner overshadowed everything else. Clearly the business would fail. Why?

The Scriptures say, "Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall." - Proverbs 16:18 (GNB)
The business started with a bang. Perhaps it would be better to say a big splash. And as you already guessed, a few years latter ended with an unpretentious end.

God hates pride and arrogance. See Proverbs 8:13 and other Scriptures.
The Scriptures teach us, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." - James 4:6,10 (GNB)

If we want to be lifted up, exalted, honored, praised, we have to humble ourselves before God. He will lift us up in his own time and way.

The loftiest position a human can attain on earth, is flat on their face in humble submission to God our creator.
